HBO ANNOUNCES “THE LAST OF US” TV SERIES

HBO has announced some incredible and exciting news for horror and video game fans everywhere! The cable channel is currently developing a television series based on the 2013 hit game, The Last of Us. The show will be produced by both Sony Pictures Television Studios and Playstation Productions.

The Last of Us is a post-apocalyptic survival epic that follows two unlikely companions, Joel and Ellie, as they make their way through the ruins of what’s left of the United States after a virus sweeps the nation and turns the majority of the population into cannibalistic monsters known as Clickers. The fate of humanity lies in Joel and Ellie’s cross-country journey as Ellie’s blood may contain the key to the cure for the monstrous pandemic.

The news of a TV series of The Last of Us alone is certainly interesting, but considering that video games have had a pretty rocky history when it comes to adaptations to film or television, there’s also plenty of reasons to be skeptical. Thankfully though, it looks like the series is in very good hands right out of the gate. In their announcement for the series, HBO included that the show will be co-written and executive produced by Craig Mazin and none other than the creator of the source material himself, Neil Druckmann.

Craig Mazin is the perfect writer to bring on for this adaptation considering that he not only co-hosts a podcast called Scriptnotes that is all about screenwriting and the importance of story, but he is also the writer and show-runner of last year’s fantastic Emmy-winning HBO miniseries, Chernobyl. And the icing on the cake is that he is a self-professed fan of the video game. When the news came out, Mazin went to twitter to write about how this has been a dream production for him for many years. Add this with the fact that the original creator of the game will be his co-pilot and I would say this ship is under the care of two very good captains.

The series is going to cover the events of the first game and will possibly include storylines from the upcoming sequel to the game set to be released this summer. As a big fan of the game, I cannot wait to see what this TV series will look like. I’ve already seen some fans online saying that Nikolaj Coster-Waldau from Game of Thrones and Kaitlyn Dever from Justified and Booksmart should play the two leads and I’ve got to say, that’s some pretty spot on fan casting right there. I could also see Matthew Rhys taking on the role of Joel as well. What do you guys think? Regardless, I think we’re in for a pretty fantastic show in the upcoming future.
