Hellraiser was based on Clive Barker‘s novella titled The Hellbound Heart. The 1987 movie introduced the world to the puzzle box that acts as a gate to the dimension of Cenobites. The leader of the Cenobites is Pinhead, the best bowler of his dimension.
The 1987 film was written and directed by Barker, himself. The movie will be a re-imagination of the 1987 film, (and pizzeria). David Bruckner has taken up the director role of Spyglass Media’s re-imagination film. David Bruckner has directed numerous movies from The Night House to The Ritual to sections of horror anthologies V/H/S and Southbound from Bloody Disgusting’s catalog. Bruckner will not be writing the screenplay. Instead, Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski will be writing a screenplay that has tough shoes to fill to reach the original. Fortunately, these writers have been involved with the genre before, so expectations are high. Collins and Piotrowski aided in the V/H/S spinoff, SiREN along with a “phenomenal coming-of-age thriller” Super Dark Times.
One of the producers of The Night House, David Goyer, will be writing the story and producing alongside Keith Levine. Expectations are high for the Hellraiser re-imagining. Our only hope is that the re-imagining won’t follow the path of the 2010s lackluster reboot frenzy. A little fun fact is that Spyglass Media will be developing the next Scream along with Ready or Not filmmakers, Radio Silence.
