Retrospective- DOOM 64

by William

We conclude our look at the classic DOOM franchise with with a rare entry- DOOM 64.

The title released in 1997 for the Nintendo 64, and is considered to be the true sequel to DOOM II. The game may not be as well known in the series but after some gameplay from the recent port (available for PS4, XBox One, Switch, PC and Steam) many players can say they missed out on a unique title.

Whereas the first two installments utilized a pseudo 3D presentation with 2D sprites and backgrounds, DOOM 64 is able to use 3D environments. Even as the objectives are the same the game has a unique presentation- perhaps akin to the cult film Heavy Metal.

On its release it was highly praised for its 3D design and gameplay. And even as the music seems lacking compared to its predecessors it holds up as a solid FPS title. The newly released edition is free for those who pre ordered DOOM Eternal and includes an additional epilogue chapter. And try your hands with motion controls for the PS4 and Switch!

Even if you didn’t pre order DOOM Eternal you can still purchase this gem for less than $10. So what are you waiting for? Tear and slash through this classic!
